southwest-airlines-baggage-allowance

Flying under budget is one of the most necessary things to save while traveling because airfare is often unpredictable and may sometimes cost an arm and a leg. This is where Southwest Airlines comes in as a major US low-cost airline offering convenient options. Believing in providing passengers the ease of traveling anywhere without worrying about the extra airfare, Southwest has become a reliable name for many.

But is the cost of traveling only bound to the flight tickets? No. Many times, passengers overlook the baggage allowances, which ultimately results in extra charges. Before you book your Southwest Airlines flight ticket, here is a detailed guide on the baggage allowance, including a policy for bags with fares.

Southwest Airlines Carry-On Allowance

Southwest Airlines allows passengers to bring a carry-on bag and one personal item free of charge. The policy remains the same for all passengers, with restrictions on the weight and dimensions of the baggage they carry.

  • The carry-on bag should be small enough to fit in the overhead compartment or under seat space.
  • The measurement, including the wheel, handles, and other attachments, must be no more than 24” (L) + 16” (W) + 10” (H).
  • Personal items such as purses, briefcases, laptop computer cases, and a backpack are allowed onboard.
  • When traveling with a pet, the carrier is included in your carry-on bag or the personal item.

Southwest Airlines Cabin Baggage Allowance

When traveling with Southwest Airlines, every passenger can bring 2 checked bags for free. The airline allows a maximum of 10 bags onboard but at an additional cost. Also, checked baggage has a size and weight restriction. Not adhering to the policy will result in an extra baggage fee.

  • The bags must not exceed 62 inches in total dimensions, length + width + height.
  • The weight is restricted to 50 lbs for both.
  • If you carry more than 2 bags, the first 2 bags will be free of charge; however, the remaining bags will be charged according to the weight and other regulations set by the airline for extra baggage.

Southwest Airlines Extra Baggage Charges

There are instances where we have to carry more bags than the airlines allow free of cost. We have listed the fee the airline charges for each overweight or oversized bag.

  • The airline charges $75 for each bag weighing over 50 lbs.
  • The fare for oversized baggage, measuring more than 62 inches, is around $75 per bag.
  • The extra baggage fee for Southwest Airlines is $75 per bag.

As airlines often update their fares and policies, it is always advised to get in touch with the experts at Southwest Airlines or your OTA partner to get updated information on baggage policy, fares, and restrictions.
