In its latest move, Southwest Airlines has announced a few important changes to its baggage policy. The airline is all set to end its old policy of offering two free checked bags to every passenger.
From May 28, 2025, only Southwest Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and Business Select fare passengers will continue to receive two free checked bags. A-list members and select customers will receive one free checked bag, whereas Rapid Rewards Credit Card members will receive a credit for one checked bag.
What is important to note here is that all others will now have to pay a charge for their first and second checked bags. Weight and size restrictions will continue as earlier.
Moreover, the airline is also fine-tuning its loyalty program. It will now offer more points for Business Select fares and slash rewards for lower-tier tickets. A new basic fare for most budget travelers will come into effect alongside assigned seating and extra legroom options.
Southwest Airlines, renowned for its customer-friendly policies, is also expanding its distribution channels, with flights now available on Expedia. The airline is also set to reduce flexibility for flight credits, as they will now expire a year or earlier from the date of purchase.
