The Savannah Historic District

The impeccably preserved Savannah Historic District is one of the best places for you to start exploring Savannah. You will find significant buildings all around. The starting point, at the intersection of Bull and Bay Streets, is City Hall. The U.S. Customs House, the site of the colony's first public building, is opposite City Hall. Johnson Square, the first public square built in the newly planned town, with Christ Episcopal Church built in 1838 on the site of the colony's first church of 1733 to the south. This area of Savannah has a lot of historic squares to visit, so take your time and have your camera ready.

Forsyth Park

Savannah's largest and most visited park, Forsyth Park, was built in the mid-19th century and has since remained a magnet for tourists and locals alike. The park's highlights include its large cast-iron fountain. In the spring, the blooming azaleas add to its charm. It also features several noteworthy public spaces, such as a café, snack bar, tennis courts, Band Shell, and visitor center. The park has been through several restorations, including a major repair in the late 1980s.

River Road

River Street is a busy tourist area that runs between Factors Walk and Savannah's historic waterfront neighborhood. It is lined with beautifully maintained old warehouses that are now used as stores, eateries, and hotels. A new multi-million dollar development has introduced even more exciting activities to this popular region on the south bank of the Savannah River. New dining options and a smattering of upscale stores and galleries were added, along with the opulent new JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District hotel and a modern performance venue, Plant Riverside, located at the west end of River Street.
